Appendix E. Export Control ProceduresFor reasons of national security and protection of trade, federal law 15 CFR Parts 730-774, regulates the export of specific technologies and/or information to persons who are not U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents. Export is defined as transfer of restricted material—verbally, visually, or in writing—either within, or outside of, the United States. These restrictions apply not only to specific research projects but to other more traditional academic collaborations and interactions such as travel to foreign countries. It is a requirement of the law that institutions have a policy regulating the management of export control issues which is disseminated to all employees of the institution. Penalties for violation may result in severe fines and legal action and apply to both the institution and the individual. On July 19, 2006, the export control documents shown below were temporarily approved by Dr. John C. Cavanaugh, President, University of West Florida, to provide necessary protection for the institution and its employees or agents and comply with requirements for federal funding. Developed by Research and Sponsored Programs in consultation with University Counsel, they provide a working process for assessing and managing issues related to export control. Formal adoption of these procedures as University policy has been requested and is currently under review. UWF Export Control Procedures (Interim) References
